Mädchen in Uniform: Leontine Sagan and Carl Froelich’s still-provocative romantic film tells the story of a 14-year-old Prussian girl who is sent by her family to a boarding school, where she promptly gets smitten with one of her teachers. The said teacher is not only beautiful but also an island of gentleness and caring attitude in a sea of discipline and authoritarianism. As such, the film serves as a gentle critique of those very things. The protagonist, played well by Hertha Thiele, is a lively and sensitive girl who is clearly in deep need of affection after losing her mother. Dorothea Wieck, as the teacher, is also fine, being caring but not soft. Edited by Oswald Hafenrichter, the film moves along nicely; the expressionist images of cinematographers Reimar Kuntze and Franz Weihmayr can be memorable.
