Fifth about The Seventh

Materialists

Materialists: at least, everybody in Celine Song’s film is earnest about their cynicism regarding love. The protagonist is a New York City matchmaker who sees love as purely transactional, and she is torn between a multi-wealthy suitor and her former boyfriend, a struggling actor. Now, if she sees love as a transaction, why then is she torn between them? Well, because! The film is pleasurable enough, mostly due to its attractive and efficient cast, but it is somewhat unconvincing in its logic. Dakota Johnson plays the beautiful protagonist, an analytical and honest woman who is not cold enough to turn off her two beaus. Pedro Pascal is smooth as the wealthy but likable suitor, while Chris Evans plays the almost-loser in the slightly more interesting performance of the film. Effectively made; cinematographer Shabier Kirchner moves the camera smoothly and elegantly as he captures NYC with the city’s usual (cinema) glow. Composer Daniel Pemberton’s musical score is charming.
