Fifth about The Seventh

Splitsville

Splitsville: the marketing team of Michael Angelo Covino’s film was not kidding when they stated this to be “unromantic”, but they were a bit generous in calling this a comedy. The film follows two couples who go through all sorts of relationship problems after a disastrous weekend. The main issue is that all four central characters have no redeeming qualities (besides, to be superficial, the sex appeal of the two women), are unqualified for any kind of human relations, and their pairings make no sense. The film has a few mildly entertaining touches and interesting visual solutions, but the time spent with those characters is painful. Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona are both lovely in their own ways, so it’s easy to see why the other characters are head-over-heels about them, but both play such unconvincing characters that there’s not much they can do; Kyle Marvin and Covino himself (both are, incidentally, co-writers of this mess) are regular joes and annoying ones at that. Editor Sara Shaw, director of photography Adam Newport-Berra, and production designer Stephen Phelps build a couple of interesting sequences to show the passage of time.
