The Mohican: Frédéric Farrucci’s quiet, tight thriller follows a Corsican goatherder who must go on the run after the Mob pressures him to sell them his land, and he refuses. The protagonist is a simple man who wants nothing more than to continue the family tradition, so it’s not hard to see how he can become an unlikely hero for a seemingly lost cause. He is well played by Alexis Manenti with silent intensity and physicality. Mara Taquin, as his hard-as-nails nephew fighting the same battle on another front, is also efficient in her role. Cinematographer Jeanne Lapoirie captures the action on the island with elegant camerawork that avoids undue romanticism, and editor Mathilde Van de Moortel keeps the pace brisk and storytelling without extraneous fat.
