Carnival Is Over: Fernando Coimbra’s entertaining thriller follows a married couple who, intent on leaving behind his family business (an illegal gambling operation created by his father), hatch a harebrained plan that, naturally, doesn’t quite work as intended. The protagonists are anti-heroes at best, but their flaws and overconfidence make them interesting. The two central performances are fine: Leandra Leal plays the wife, a sort of Lady Macbeth lite, increasingly paranoid and untrusting; Irandhir Santos plays the husband, somewhat a Prince Hamlet, a man filled with doubts. Irene Ravache brings some levity to the film as a small-time con artist in her scenes with her daughter. Aesthetically, the film looks good; costume designer Valeria Stefani dresses her stars well and meaningfully; editor Karen Harley gives the film a very nice, attention-grabbing rhythm; the sound design is solid; and cinematographer Ulisses Malta Jr. moves and places the camera elegantly. Very interesting musical selection.
