Fifth about The Seventh

Return to Seoul (Retour à Séoul)

Return to Seoul: Davy Chou’s drama follows a young woman who was given up for adoption by her South Korean parents and grew up in France, only to return to Seoul on an impromptu trip. Sad and above all, angry, the protagonist struggles to understand her birthland, its language, culture, and even what her goal there is. She is an interesting, not fully sympathetic character, but her pain is easy to relate to, and it’s a good performance by actress PARK Ji-min. Her Korean father, also a well of pain and lack of understanding, is likewise well played by OH Gwang-rok. Director of photography Thomas Favel captures the action with an elegant camera, and editor Dounia Sichov maintains a steady and enticing pace. The varied music choice is good and meaningful to the story.
