Fifth about The Seventh

Reflection in a Dead Diamond (Reflet dans un Diamant Mort)

Reflection in a Dead Diamond: Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani’s pastiche of a certain triple-digit spy franchise follows an aging former agent as he revisits the location of an old mission, triggering all sorts of memories. Or does it? This is not a deep story, but it is definitely entertaining. The film, edited by Bernard Beets, jumps back and forth between the elder version of the character and him in his heyday, which gives it an almost devious and demented energy; it is very dynamic and smartly cut. Fabio Testi, as the old spy, is an inspired piece of casting or characterization, as he strongly resembles Sean Connery, and his performance, as a man a bit out ot touch with reality, is fine. Yannick Renier, as his younger version, is charming and gleefully brutal. Cinematographer Manuel Dacosse frames the images nicely, key to making the editing work. The costume and production designers effectively create the film’s old-school aesthetics.
