Fifth about The Seventh

Two to One (Zwei zu Eins)

Two to One: loosely inspired by true events, Natja Brunckhorst’s comedy tells the story of a group of people from pre-reunification East Germany who find a fortune in old banknotes and must rush against the deadline to exchange it for new currency. It is interesting to see how their little caper increases in complexity over time, but mixing that storyline with a family drama feels tacked-in and drags the overall pace. The cast is filled with recognizable faces, chiefly among them Sandra Hüller (who plays a tomboy-ish mother of two at the center of the caper), but the performances in general are just appropriate and unmemorable. Likewise, aesthetically the film works but it is far from remarkable in any sense. The choice of having almost exclusively songs in English in its soundtrack feels peculiar and unjustified.
