Dreams (Sex Love): layered and poetic, Dag Johan Haugerud’s lovely film tells the story of a high-schooler who develops a crush on one of her teachers. Or maybe it tells the story of her telling such a story, since she writes a book about her experience, which is read by her mother and grandmother. The film is heavily but beautifully narrated, and that voice-over opens up space for multiple interpretations. How much of it is what happened, and how much is the protagonist’s daydreams about it? Ella Øverbye plays the main character, a teenager in transformation and in reflection about those changes, and she is engrossing to watch. Selome Emnetu plays the teacher, Ane Dahl Torp plays the mother, and Anne Marit Jacobsen plays the grandmother, all of whom are effective in their respective roles. Cinematographer Cecilie Semec’s elegant camerawork creates several beautiful images. Composer Anna Berg’s musical score is quite varied and interesting.
