Fifth about The Seventh

Fauna (2020)

Fauna: Nicolás Pereda’s drily amusing little film shows one family’s weekend: the daughter, alongside her small-bit actor boyfriend, visits her parents in a distant small Mexican village, and there she meets her brother for the first time in a while. The familial relationships are all strained, and that gives birth to a series of scenes where awkwardness is the key takeaway. Most of the scenes unfurl in front of an observational camera, generally static, in a fine work by cinematographer Mariel Baqueiro. The performances are low-key, but efficient: Luisa Pardo plays the young woman, herself an actress; Francisco Barreiro, her aiming-to-please boyfriend; Gabino Rodríguez, her brother; Teresa Sánchez and José Rodríguez López, her parents. The short runtime and the general tone of the film make this an intriguing experience.
