Cobweb: KIM Jee-woon’s film tells the story of a film director who, tired of his fame for directing only pulpy movies, decides to re-shoot the ending of his latest work, aiming to achieve a masterpiece. However, he has to deal with penny-pinching executives with no respect for artistic vision, a difficult cast that includes a playboy leading man and a pregnant up-and-comer, government censors, and the hardships of his ambition. The result is an entertaining and mildly insightful look at the backstage of a film shoot. The cast is in fine shape: SONG Kang-ho, as the obsessive director who doesn’t quite understand is obsession or knows how to go about it, is quite good; JEON Yeo-been, as the daughter of his old master and the only one fully behind him, is very funny in her hole of an independent-minded woman; likewise, OH Jung-se as the womanizing leading acto and Krystal Jung, who plays the new starlet. Editor YANG Jin-mo mixes, in the editing room, the film with the film-in-the-film, to great effect; cinematographer KIM Ji-yong captures it all nicely with a dynamic camera. It’s a fun exercise to see a crucial tracking shot from both sides of the camera. Composer Mowg’s musical score fits it well, and the production design is spot on.
