Fifth about The Seventh

Homem com H

Homem com H: a performer as defiant and risqué as Ney Matogrosso probably deserved a biopic a bit less traditional than Esmir Filho’s film. However, his life is interesting and intense enough that the linear and unremarkable structure is not too much of a disservice. The film covers his trajectory, from his tumultuous relationship with his father to his growth as a performer and his many emotional entanglements with both men and women. Jesuíta Barbosa gives a fabulous performance as the protagonist, imbuing his posture with power and defiance, but not forgetting his vulnerability when he sheds his stage persona’s skin. Rômulo Braga, as his father, is brutal and eventually sweet, in a character arc that is present but manages to underwhelm. The film, naturally, puts Ney Matogrosso’s music in full display, with many of his greatest hits present. Competently shot by cinematographer Azul Serra and edited by editor Germano de Oliveira, with solid period recreation and costume design.
