Fifth about The Seventh

A Normal Family (Botong-ui Gajok)

A Normal Family: in this family drama/thriller by HUR Jin-ho, the story follows a pair of brothers, one a dedicated doctor and the other, a big-league lawyer. They don’t see eye to eye on most things, from how they should treat their ailing mother to taking different sides in a traffic incident. Their similarly aged teenage kids take that relationship to new levels of strain. The characters are generally unpleasant, and the situation is morally bankrupt, but it allows for a good deal of social critique that feels appropriate. Acting is solid: SUL Kyung-gu plays the older brother, an ambitious lawyer, cold and distant; JANG Dong-gun plays the younger, a doctor with a strong sense of morality; KIM Hee-ae plays the doctor’s wife, a caring wife and mother with a story of voluntary work; Claudia Kim plays the trophy wife of the lawyer, but the closest thing to the film’s soul, and her performance is the one that lingers the most afterwards. The film is elegantly made; cinematographer GO Rak-sun’s camerawork is clean and efficient, and editor KIM Hyung-joo keeps the story moving with a pleasant pace.
