Girls Will Be Girls: Shuchi Talati’s delicate drama follows a last-year high school student who needs to balance her obligations as a student and as a newly-minted class prefect, as well as the flourishing of romantic feelings for a classmate. Set in a quiet mountainside boarding school, the film offers a different look at India, which is welcome in itself. It also takes a look at gender politics within that conservative culture. Preeti Panigrahi, as the protagonist, is good at portraying the serious girl who is, all of a sudden, expanding her horizons. Kesav Binoy Kiron, as her beau, is charming. Kani Kusruti plays her young mother well. Cinematographer Jih-E Peng captures the action with an efficient and simple camerawork; editor Amrita David gives the film a nice rhythm, and musical composers Sneha Khanwalkar and Pierre Oberkampf contribute with a nice score.
