Boléro: Anne Fontaine’s biopic of Maurice Ravel focuses mostly on his time composing what is arguably his most famous piece, “Boléro”; some other periods of his life are brushed upon, to accentuate his character’s traits. It is a generally competent but unexciting portrait, partly because of the composer’s early attitude towards his work. Raphaël Personnaz does fine work as the protagonist, a brilliant man full of manias set in his own way; it is a cold portrait of the man. Doria Tillier, Jeanne Balibar, and Emmanuelle Devos are fine as three important female figures in the story. Production design (by Riton Dupire-Clément) and costume design (by Anaïs Romand) are well-made. Cinematographer Christophe Beaucarne captures the action with an elegant but unoriginal camerawork. The music piece is used sparingly at first, but eventually it makes its triumphant and triumphalist appearance.
