The Most Precious of Cargoes: this animation, by Michel Hazanavicius, is yet another good reminder of why animation is not a genre but a medium. It tells the story of a lumberjack and his wife who find a baby in the woods where they live; this is not quite a fairytale, however, since the couple lives near a concentration camp during the Second World War. The story is naturally very touching, and the film is unafraid of violence and the darkness of mankind. Voice acting is sparse but effective: Dominique Blanc plays the headstrong wife, who finds and insists on keeping the child; Grégory Gadebois plays the gruff but virtuous lumberjack; and Denis Podalydès, the disfigured veteran who lives nearby. The animation is beautiful, even in its simplicity: the colours are muted, the lighting of the environments is exquisite, and the characters are well-designed. The melodious musical score, by Alexandre Desplat, underscores perfectly the film’s mood.
