Fifth about The Seventh

The Pigeon Tunnel

The Pigeon Tunnel: Errol Morris’s insightful and personal documentary about John le Carré, first and foremost, showcases what a powerful storyteller the writer was. His story, or parts of it, may or may not be objectively true (as he himself puts it), but it’s certainly romantic and exciting through and through and made riveting by the wordsmith’s voice. The conversation is rich, as both Morris is a solid interviewer and le Carré, a good interviewee; it touches his story, where his thematic preferences may come from, his views on the craft. A good portion of the film is “talking head style”, but cinematographer Igor Martinović shoots the conversations dramatically and unusually; some re-enactments (which are competently produced) are part of the package, as well. Editor Steven Hathaway mixes those and some archival footage very nicely, giving the film a very good pace; the fragmented visual language fits the theme well. The musical score, by Philip Glass and Paul Leonard-Morgan, is rather effective.
