Fifth about The Seventh

Revanche (2008)

Revanche: surprisingly serene, Götz Spielmann’s film follows a small-time criminal who decides to run away with his prostitute girlfriend, and to fund that, plans to rob a bank. His incompetence, along with that of the village policeman who crosses paths with him, takes him (and the film) to surprising and welcome places. The acting is quiet, low-key, and effective: Johannes Krisch plays the moody protagonist, a hurt romantic; Hannes Thanheiser, as his ailing grandfather, is softer and sweeter than that kind of role is generally played; Andreas Lust, as the young and eager cop, is also good in portraying the world of hurt of his character; Ursula Strauss, as the policeman’s frustrated wife and caring friend of the grandfather, does well in a relevant role. The film is serene but moves at a good pace, thanks to effective work by editor Karina Ressler. Cinematographer Martin Gschlacht captures the proceedings with classic, elegant camerawork.
