Filmlovers!: Arnaud Desplechin’s mix of docudrama and essay is both erudite and heartfelt; it is, above all, a love for cinema, and how that love inspired the director (and others) to go from filmlovers to filmmakers. The voice-over (alternatively the director Desplechin and Mathieu Amalric) verges on the excessively philosophical at times, but escaping from the obvious is welcome. The director’s alter ego is played by a few different actors in the episodes over the years, which creates the thread from his first time in a movie theater (probably the cutest and funniest of all episodes) until the moment he is convinced to become a director. Cinematographer Noé Bach captures them with a good deal of nostalgia, enhanced by the capable production design (by Toma Baqueni) and costume design (by Judith de Luze). Editor Laurence Briaud mixes a good deal of film footage, making this more a delight to, well, filmlovers.
