Along Came Love: Katell Quillévéré’s film follows a young mother who, just after the end of World War II, meets a wealthy student and starts a relationship; both of them, however, have a past they are running from. The issue is that there is too much going on, and the lack of focus weakens the experience as a whole; the sudden time jumps, which softly reset the situation, have the same result. Anaïs Demoustier and Vincent Lacoste play the two protagonists well enough, but neither gives a particularly memorable performance. Morgan Bailey, as a G.I. who befriends them, is a bit too broad and off-tone. Aesthetically, the film is fine: cinematographer Tom Harari, costume designer Rachèle Raoult, and production designer Florian Sanson do solid but unremarkable work.
