The Woman Next Door: François Truffaut’s drama tells the story of two former lovers, reunited as she moves with her husband to a neighboring house. The original affair was complicated and contentious, and the new one is not much better; the amount of two-way abuse makes this a hard (but engaging) sit. The two protagonists, played by Fanny Ardant and Gérard Depardieu, are hurt people, obsessive and depressive. Her performance is wonderful, with a great range, from sad, quiet side looks to luminous smiles; his performance is very good, even if the less sympathetic nature of the character limits the range a bit. The camera of cinematographer William Lubtchansky is mobile, fluid, and elegant. The musical score, by composer Georges Delerue, is beautiful and a great fit.
