Fifth about The Seventh

September 5

September 5: Tim Fehlbaum’s tight account of the terrorist attack on Israeli athletes during the Munich 1972 Olympic games is focused exclusively on one particular point of view, that of the sports broadcast team that covered the event.  As happens with procedurals, the character development is minimal, but the film makes up for it; it is interested in other issues beyond the attack itself, but it’s always thrilling and informative nevertheless. Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, and Ben Chaplin plays well the three man in charge of the broadcast, but it’s Leonie Benesch, as the German translator (and the only local member of the team) who gives the most effective performance. The action is mostly confined to the studio and control room, credibly built by production designer Julian R. Wagner; cinematographer Markus Förderer stays up-close and personal to the actors, reinforcing their stress. Editor Hansjörg Weißbrich very effectively mixes the footage from the actual broadcast with the actors, and the pace achieved is superb.
