The Wonders: Alice Rohrwacher’s drama follows a family of farmers in Italy; almost miserable, struggling to stay afloat, their main source of income is honey. One summer, the narrative’s focus, the eldest daughter (but still a young teenager), decides to put the family in a reality television show, much to the chagrin of her overbearing father. The protagonist, played nicely by Maria Alexandra Lungu, is a hard-working and smart girl, looked down upon by her father for not being a boy, and still dreamy despite her hard reality. Sam Louwyck plays her hardheaded and brutish father, not unloving but prone to impractical decisions. Alba Rohrwacher, as the almost voiceless mother, is fine. Cinematographer Hélène Louvart’s work finds some poetry in the images of poverty and harsh environments. The film is filled with sadness, even if tinged with some hope, but the realistic tone helps alleviate that.
