Fifth about The Seventh

Anora

Anora: Sean Baker’s film follows the journey of the eponymous character, a stripper who starts to go out with one of his clients, a young Russian man-boy, and gets married to him on a whim. Things get really out of hand when his powerful family finds out and decides to interfere. The film goes into overdrive, brimming with chaotic energy, often hilarious and always entertaining. Much of that comes from Mikey Madison’s performance as the mercurial young woman, somewhat naïve despite her profession, potty-mouthed, and unwilling to take any lip from anybody. Karren Karagulian and Vache Tovmasyan are funny as two henchmen, but Yura Borisov nearly steals the show as the quietest of the three; his performance is relatively quiet but with wonderful comedic reactions. Baker himself edits the film with impeccable comic timing while reinforcing the relationship’s chaos early on.
