Sidewalls: Gustavo Taretto’s lovely romantic comedy doubles as an interesting reflection on how urban spaces (Buenos Aires in particular) enhance the social maladies of modern societies. Of course, it would be for naught if the pair of protagonists weren’t so engaging. The film tells the story of two young professionals who live next door but never meet due to the usual array of modern issues. Javier Drolas plays the male protagonist quietly and effectively; Pilar López de Ayala, who plays his counterpart, is lovely and nails the larger range of her role; it’s not quite proper to talk about chemistry, but it’s easy to root for the pair’s happiness. Cinematographer Leandro Martínez and editors Pablo Mari and Rosario Suárez allow the reflections about the city to be visually represented (and add a few adorable visual narrative solutions). Composer Gabriel Chwojnik contributes a very fine musical score, both beautiful and always thematically relevant.
