My Favourite Cake: Maryam Moghadam and Behtash Sanaeeha’s drama tells the story of a 70-year-old woman who leads a lonely life. A widower whose kids live outside Iran, with friends she barely sees, she randomly meets a divorced taxi driver of her age who has the same issue. What follows is both sweet and sour, a lovely journey. Lili Farhadpour plays the old lady, a sweet soul still hungry for more and willing to challenge the norm, quite well; Esmaeel Mehrabi plays the taxi driver, likewise, a gentle and hard-working man who sees this as a chance for something good. Cinematographer Mohamad Hadadi captures the action, mostly long and engaging dialogues, with enough dynamism to keep the film visually interesting without being distracting. Very nice use of music, with the song that plays over the credits perfectly capturing and enhancing the moment’s mood.
