Fifth about The Seventh

Stories Not to Be Told (Historias para No Contar)

Stories Not to Be Told: Cesc Gay’s mosaic comedy tells five independent stories, connected thematically (as they all include characters struggling to decide whether or not to say something) and geographically (they all take place in Barcelona). The stories mostly deal with romance (or, at the very least, sex) and are somewhat uneven but generally entertaining and happily inconsequential. The large cast (the poster does not manage to include everyone), which counts Chino Darín, Maribel Verdú, and Javier Cámara as the most recognizable names, is in fine form, with solid comic timing; the stories are short, so no one stays on for too long, but the performances are consistently funny. Cinematographer Andreu Rebés captures it nicely, and editor Liana Artigal keeps the film moving along; composer Arnau Bataller’s score fits the material well.
