Zoran, My Nephew the Idiot: the protagonist of Matteo Oleotto’s dramedy is a loner, a slightly unpleasant and misanthropic man living in a small town in northern Italy. He sees an opportunity when he meets his likewise loner nephew, an “idiot” (in the protagonist’s words, at least; he is not the most politically correct person in the room, to say the least) with an unusual and preternatural talent. The way their uneasy relationship evolves is predictable, but not any less enjoyable. The acting is quite good; Giuseppe Battiston plays the main character well, a man who walks the fine line between being a charmer and a very hateful person. Rok Prašnikar plays the nephew, a shy young man who is very easy to get along with. Their opposite attitudes and appearances are a source of some amusement. Editor Giuseppe Trepiccione has excellent comic timing and cinematographer Ferran Paredes gives the film earthy tones that feel appropriate for the story. The music leans heavily into the choir, which also has a presence in the plot.
