The Servant: Joseph Losey’s drama looks into perverse power games, as it tells the story of an aristocrat who hires a servant to take care of his house, their relationship as well as with his fiancée. The film is interesting in a very twisted sort of way, even if no character is particularly engaging; it creates the expectation of what might happen with them, but not for their sakes. Dirk Bogarde plays the title character, a duplicitous and darkly efficient man, quite well; James Fox, as the aristocratic man-boy, hits all the right notes as the rather pathetic character; Wendy Craig, as his imperious and uppity fiancée, is likewise efficient. In any case, the real star of the show has to be director of photography Douglas Slocombe, with his exquisite deep-focus framing and expressive lighting.
