Queer: Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical novel follows a queer middle-aged man, living in Mexico, where he pursues a younger fellow American. The first part of the film, which presents his life and social circle there, is very engaging and entertaining; the second half drags a bit when he is following up on another obsession. Daniel Craig plays the protagonist very nicely, a man who is comfortable with his sexuality but is generally very insecure. Drew Starkey plays his love interest as a bit of a cold cipher, but an attractive man nevertheless. Jason Schwartzman plays his minor role, a good friend of the protagonist, with welcome levity. The director milks the uneasiness of the situation with oneiric and dark visuals (very solid camerawork by cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom), and the use of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ musical score and noncontemporaneous songs. The production design, by Stefano Baisi, is detailed and well done.
