Fifth about The Seventh

Marcello Mio

Marcello Mio: Christophe Honoré’s gentle comedy doubles up as a stroll through the Marcello Mastroianni Nostalgia Lane and a reflection on living up to one’s heritage. Chiara Mastroianni plays a version of herself where the (inner and outer) pressure of being Marcello’s daughter gets too uncomfortable, so she starts dressing like him and asking people to refer to her by his name. As she has more than a passing resemblance to her father, and has the gestuals pretty down pat, the illusion is quite good. It is an easygoing, fine performance. Catherine Deneuve, as “herself”, is delicately caring for the daughter she sees taking a most peculiar path. Fabrice Luchini plays the new best friend of Marcello with quiet energy. The film looks good enough, but it’s far from special in any particular aspect.
