Altman: director Robert Altman was a maverick, an unconventional and rebellious artist who, particularly in the later part of his long career, had a signature type of films he liked to make and a general aesthetic, both out of the beaten track of traditional narrative cinema. So it is a bit disappointing that Ron Mann’s loving documentary on his life and career is so conventional; also, while it is informative, most of what it shows is a matter of public record (mostly interviews and press conferences). The doc is a superficial compendium of known facts without particular insights into the man. Still, since Altman was such an interesting person and artist, the film is not devoid of interest. Editor Robert Kennedy weaves the chronological tale with a healthy mix of archival footage, both public and private, and snippets of his work.
