The Successor: movies often call for a measure of suspension of disbelief, particularly when they veer into the thriller genre; Xavier Legrand’s protagonist, however, makes so many illogical and uncharacteristic choices that one wonders if there was not a mix-up of screenplays. The film follows a young fashion designer who, after the death of his estranged father, must go to Canada to settle his affairs; there, some uncomfortable facts are uncovered. The writing makes the protagonist barely bearable since there is no consistency to what his history is supposed to be; Marc-André Grondin makes for a striking presence and has many emotional moments, but he can’t make his character gel. Cinematographer Nathalie Durand and composer Sebastian Akchoté contribute a lot to build the tension in the correct moments.
