François Truffaut, My Life, a Screenplay: the access that David Teboul’s documentary has to François Truffaut is exceptional. Understandable, since the project was started by Truffaut himself, as an autobiography. Most of that comes from Truffaut’s extensive correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues; as such, they are tremendously deep and insightful into the inner workings of the man and artist, which are naturally quite interconnected. There are also many interviews and press conferences to complete the portrait. In that sense, the first accomplishment of this project was in creating such a fine narrative thread, a great work by Teboul and co-writer Serge Toubiana; editor Caroline Detournay puts it all together with generous use of Truffaut’s work, as well as thematically connected footage. The talent reading the letters, chiefly Louis Garrel as the subject, does great work.
