Fifth about The Seventh

Daaaaaalí!

Daaaaaalí!: Quentin Dupieux’s penchant for surrealistic stories makes him the perfect name to direct this film, a (as they call it) fake biopic of Salvador Dalí. The film’s aesthetics and mannerisms are inspired by Dalí and Luis Buñuel, and it is always an entertaining journey. The plot, such as it is, concerns the fruitless attempts of a journalist to record an interview with Dalí. She is played with aplomb by Anaïs Demoustier, despite all the demands and absurdities happening with her interview. Dalí is played by a committee (Édouard Baer, Jonathan Cohen, Gilles Lellouche, Pio Marmaï, Didier Flamand, and Boris Gillot), generally with his larger-than-life arrogance and self-importance, but always genial, pleasing and engaging.

The narrative, written and edited by Dupieux, turns around itself again and again, always to amusing effect (and often, quoting Buñuel). Additionally, the film has several visual jokes that land quite well. Composer Thomas Bangalter contributes a score that is simply perfect for the film: drinking from the Spanish sonority and using a structure that circles around and grows on itself.
