The Second Act: Quentin Dupieux’s irreverent and entertaining film follows a group of characters (technically they precede them since the film’s biggest scenes are walk-and-talks where the camera leads the people): a man, who is trying to convince a friend to meet a woman who offers unrequited love, as well as the woman and her father. Well, except they are all actors playing those characters; or maybe there is yet another layer. The film is dialogue-heavy, and somewhat slight (despite its critique of many modern trends), but more often than not quite hilarious. As usual, it helps to have such a fine cast reading the lines: Léa Seydoux plays the actress playing the enamored woman well enough; Vincent Lindon plays the veteran actor playing her father; Louis Garrel, the charming actor playing the charming man she is in love with; Raphaël Quenard, in the best performance of the bunch, plays the newcomer actor playing the vulgar and simple friend. Dupieux himself efficiently shot and edited the film.
