Fifth about The Seventh

Age of Panic (La Bataille de Solférino)

Age of Panic: the choice of Justine Triet to set this dramedy on the eve of a very divisive presidential election in France is no mere stunt. Like the two halves of that country, the two halves of a (former) couple can’t seem to see eye-to-eye or have any constructive communication. She is a journalist, covering the election, while he is a father trying to visit their daughters, but a lack of communication makes it very hard. It’s not an uninteresting storyline, but both aspects drag a bit. Some domestic scenes drag more than anything else, and the political rally directly adds little to the story, even if the thematic gains are clear. Laetitia Dosch plays the fearful woman decently enough, while Vincent Macaigne plays the bumbling but short-fused father quite well. Aesthetically, the film is unremarkable either way.
