Journey to the Shore: KUROSAWA Kiyoshi’s film deals with grief and closure, as he follows a couple who goes on a journey around small cities in Japan when the husband reappears after three years; the catch is that he is dead, a fact that is never in doubt by either him or his wife. The veil that separates the living and the dead is flimsy, so they meet people in a similar situation, in a few poetic, delicate, and touching episodes. Nevertheless, the film can be ponderously paced at times. The performances are quietly effective: FUKATSU Eri plays the loving and determined wife, while ASANO Tadanobu plays the calm, knowing husband. Cinematographer ASHIZAWA Akiko captures the serene images and uses simple lighting tricks alongside editor IMAI Tsuyoshi to convey changes in the world state.
