Certified Copy: this drama, by Abbas Kiarostami, follows a middle-aged man and woman; him, a writer, and her, a fan, who meet as he is in Tuscany to promote his new book. They drive around, and talk about the book and art, until revelations shake what we know about their relationship. The film is meandering and inconclusive, but that’s its beauty; the dialogues are interesting. However, the story never feels like there are large stakes in place or much urgency. Juliette Binoche gives an excellent performance as a woman who is vulnerable and uncertain. William Shimell plays the writer, an intelligent and evasive man, with sufficient aplomb. The camera work of Director of Photography Luca Bigazzi is dynamic, with the camera discreetly following the action.
