Hold Me Tight: Mathieu Amalric’s touching drama tells the story of a woman who, early one morning, walks out of her house leaving her husband and two kids behind, and hits the road. Or does it? The puzzly, layered narrative is even sadder than at first glance, going unexpected places and becoming all the more interesting for it. One crucial element for it to work is Vicky Krieps’ exceptional performance as the broken, disturbed mother and wife, who struggles to get closure. Another is the superb editing, by editor François Gédigier, who jumps from one thread to another, milking the mystery of those emotions, working with sound in a meaningful way. Cinematographer Christophe Beaucarne gives the images a dreamy quality that is very appropriate. Arieh Worthalter, who plays the husband, gives a rather fine performance.
