Fifth about The Seventh

Take Care of Your Scarf, Tatiana! (Pidä Huivista Kiinni, Tatjana)

Take Care of Your Scarf, Tatiana!: Aki Kaurismäki’s road movie showcases how love can flourish in the most adverse environments if given a chance. It follows a pair of Finnish friends who meet two Soviet hitchhiker women; despite the men’s social grace of an ox and the language barrier, the women somehow get interested in them. The film is, typically, understated, sweet, and just a bit absurd. Acting is subdued, as well: Mato Valtonen plays the coffee-addicted tailor escaping a domineering mother with the vodka-slurping rockabilly fan played by Matti Pellonpää; both are quietly funny in their entrenched shyness around women. Kirsi Tykkyläinen plays the talkative Russian, and Kati Outinen, her Estonian friend. Kaurismäki’s editing is tight, keeping the runtime very low, and the film moves along nicely, neither lingering nor rushing too much. Cinematographer Timo Salminen’s images are lovely, in lustrous black and white. The music selection focuses on 1960s rock-and-roll with a splash of folk Finn songs, and it is exceptional.
