Another World: Stéphane Brizé’s sober, solid drama follows a middle-aged man in turmoil: his marriage is in shambles, his youngest son had a mental breakdown, and his corporate overlords are pushing him to make another cost-cutting round in the industry he manages. Vincent Lindon plays the protagonist, a man seemingly seconds away from breaking down as he faces all sorts of pressure from all sides and feels it; it is a painful, efficient performance. Sandrine Kiberlain, as his wife, is essentially the same (even if her screen time is much smaller). Anthony Bajon is quietly heartbreaking as their problematic son. Cinematographer Eric Dumont gives the images a tight and nervous quality by keeping the depth of field shallow; editor Anne Klotz uses quick cuts from one scene to the next to keep the tension. Composer Camille Rocailleux’s spare musical score is quietly distressing, as well.
