Fifth about The Seventh

Testament (2023)

Testament: it is hard to understand what Denys Arcand is trying to convey in this dramedy, as he tells the story of an author and archivist, who lives in a retirement home and gets roped into a culture war about an old mural. Who is he criticizing, is it just politicians and bureaucrats or all sides in the argument? Putting so much focus on that side of the story feels like a mistake, as the protagonist’s personal story is more interesting and appealing. Alas, not even that is particularly engaging either. The performances are fine but not memorable; they are all rather mellow: Rémy Girard plays the old gent, a bit of a nihilist who doesn’t belong to his time anymore; Sophie Lorain plays the home director, controlling and a bit over her head. Marie-Mai Bouchard plays his insightful special friend. Aesthetically, the film is unremarkable.
