Fifth about The Seventh

Orphan (Orpheline)

Orphan: Arnaud des Pallières’ fragmented narrative looks into 4 episodes, showcasing the aftermath of a series of bad decisions by the protagonists (or, in fact, the single protagonist, even if played by four different actresses). As a rule, the episodes are not engaging because the protagonists, mostly, are not particularly relatable (even if one can see how they got there after all is said and done). It’s best not to get too caught up if the same character could, realistically, resemble the four actresses that play her; they all deliver good work: Adèle Haenel as the oldest version, the one who thought she left the hard life behind; Adèle Exarchopoulos, as the adult seductress; Solène Rigot, as the underage seductress; and Vega Cuzytek, as the playful kid facing a potential tragedy. The editing team (des Pallières, Guillaume Lauras, Emilie Orsini) gives all the episodes a good pace and cinematographer Yves Cape captures the action well enough.
