Dheepan: Jacques Audiard’s drama tells the story of a Sri Lankan soldier who escapes the war, going to France with a fabricated name, family, and life story. It follows the struggles with both their new and old lives. The film starts mildly interesting but seems to run out of ideas and patience to tell its tale. Acting is generally fine but not quite memorable: ANTONYTHASAN Jesuthasan, as the title character, shows determination amid his own insecurities, but the performance of Kalieaswari Srinivasan as his fake wife is a tad better. The film is well executed, with cinematography by director of photography Éponine Momenceau efficiently using colours, and editor Juliette Welfling providing the movie with a good pace. Production designer Michel Barthélémy’s work is an added element to the storytelling.
