Fifth about The Seventh

Common Wealth (La Comunidad – 2000)

Common Wealth: Álex de la Iglesia’s thriller adds some blood and humour to its Hitchcockian roots, as it tells the story of a real state agent who finds a fortune in a dead man’s apartment and has to deal with the whole building, who had their eyes in the money as well. Essentially everyone in this picture is greedy to some degree, but the protagonist is less reprehensible, murderous, and deranged than most, so she is easy to root for. It also helps that the character is so well-defended by Carmen Maura. Emilio Gutiérrez Caba plays the building manager, who is deeply involved in the efforts of the community to recover the money they see as theirs, and can get surprisingly violent. Art directors José Luis Arrizabalaga and Biaffra make good use of the rundown building to create a moody setting for the film. Cinematographer Kiko de la Rica moves the camera elegantly, and editor Alejandro Lázaro gives the film a nice pace. Composer Roque Baños also drinks from the Hitchcockian fountain with his score.
