Fifth about The Seventh

The Red Light Bandit (O Bandido da Luz Vermelha)

The Red Light Bandit: Rogério Sganzerla’s telling of the story of a famous true-life robber is brimming with chaotic energy, so much so the film is actually exhausting. The film splits its focus between the criminal, the police officer in charge of capturing him, and a corrupt politician, all reprehensible human beings. On top of that, a pair of narrators who doesn’t take anything seriously, and the sum is more akin to a loose, nihilistic essay than it is a traditional biopic. Paulo Villaça plays the title character with a good amount of derangement; Luiz Linhares, the trigger-happy police; Pagano Sobrinho, the garrulous politician, all in fine performances. Editor Sylvio Renoldi gives the film its high energy, jumping from one character to the other, using a diverse choice of musical cues, and being generally zany, with the crucial contribution of Hélio Aguiar and Mara Duval, who provide the voice-over.
