Fifth about The Seventh

Let the Sunshine In (Un Beau Soleil Intérieur)

Let the Sunshine In: Claire Denis’ drama follows a middle-aged artist’s misadventures as she looks for love. Conceptually, she knows what she is looking for (true love), but she is truly lost from moment to moment. The protagonist is a beautiful piece of acting by Juliette Binoche, who creates a woman who is sensuous, indecisive, always walking the fine line between tears and a luminous smile. The long line of bad affairs is led by Xavier Beauvois, who plays the most memorable (and memorably wrong) of them, a banker who is beyond detestable in his arrogance. The film is dialogue-heavy, and while it is generally insightful, it can also be a bit tiresome at times. Cinematographer Agnès Godard elegantly moves the camera around the subjects and editor Guy Lecorne minimizes the cutting, letting the action unfurl uninterrupted and without accentuation. Very elegant jazzy score.
