Fifth about The Seventh

Infinite Football (Fotbal Infinit)

Infinite Football: Corneliu Porumboiu’s concise and minimalist documentary follows the quixotic efforts of a Romanian bureaucrat to change the football rules, which he thinks are wrong and could be improved. He isn’t necessarily incorrect, but trying to change something as established and popular tells a lot about him. The director, who is on camera interviewing Laurențiu Ginghină, is as interested in the mindset behind the changes as he is in them. That leads to richer conversations, more philosophical and existential in nature. The film may be centered around a fool’s quest, but Ginghină is no fool, and his considerations, which go way beyond the rules of football, allow this to be a very intriguing and original experience. Aesthetically, the film is as simple as they come, with cinematographer Tudor Mircea following the pair around with a couple of cameras, and editor Roxana Szel keeping up with one shot as much as possible, within each scene.
