How Deep Is the Ocean: Andrew Walsh’s indie drama follows a young woman who moves to Melbourne and tries to, essentially, restart her life. By the amount of disagreeable happenings she is willing to take, she is clearly running away from something, but the film smartly focuses on the here and now. The charming protagonist, played well by Olivia Fildes, is abrasive just enough to become more interesting and not unpleasant. Cris Cochrane plays her sleazy flatmate with just about the right amount of ickiness. The dialogue sounds natural (the result of an improvised shooting), but most scenes drag a tiny bit and could have been trimmed by editor Ivan Malekin to give the film a more even pace. Cinematographer Scott David Lister’s solid camerawork frames well the action.
